But Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies said in a statement on the weekend that the man served in the 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS, a Nazi military unit with documented evidence of “crimes against humanity” crimes during the Holocaust. “The fact that a veteran who served in a Nazi military unit was invited to and given a standing ovation in Parliament is shocking,” the group said, calling on the government to publicly apologize.
In a statement on Sunday, Mr. Rota said had “become aware of more information” that made him regret the decision to invite Mr. Hunka, who is from his riding, saying the “initiative was entirely my own.”
“I particularly want to extend my deepest apologies to Jewish communities in Canada and around the world. I accept full responsibility for my actions.”

But he said the volunteer unit was originally formed in 1943, after Germany lost the Battle of Stalingrad, under the Waffen SS, the combat branch of the Nazi Party’s paramilitary. Mr. Katchanovski says the unit has been linked to massacres of civilians carried out in villages in Poland. It has been a source of ongoing controversy in Ukraine, he says, with Mr. Zelenksy, who is Jewish, publicly condemning a march celebrating the unit that was held in Kyiv a few months before Russia’s invasion.

What Scholtz is talking about: the UK and France have sent Storm Shadow and Scalp long-range missiles to Ukraine, just as the US has sent HIMARS missiles to Ukraine. In all 3 of those cases, the missile systems have been modified to be geo-locked so that they cannot be launched at targets inside Russia.
Scholz is concerned that the German missile system (Taurus) has much longer range (500 miles vs ~100-200 miles) and could reach Moscow. His comments about Germans not being involved in target control or target selection reflect the reality that something could go wrong if Germany implemented a similar geo-locking mechanism (they have not done so as of yet), and Ukraine could find some way to overcome those restrictions and hit Moscow with German-made Taurus missiles. Politically, the fallout could be disastrous. He is correct to worry about that possibility.
However, the exact same possibility exists for the UK, France, and the US - and they've all managed to implement these geo-restrictions successfully, and with a minimum of easily misinterpreted public statements that could serve as fodder for Russia's disinformation machine.
Now, could British and French troops be on the ground in the Ukraine right now, directly selecting targets and operating the targeting systems themselves? Sure. Is that likely? Absolutely not - that would be the highest possible level of malpractice, given the international situation.
Could they be sitting in the same room as the Ukrainian operators, walking them through the operational targeting steps, while carefully offering no opinion on which targets to select? Yes, absolutely. But if that's true, how the hell am I supposed to froth at the mouth about it? And we all know that frothing at the mouth is more fun, so that's why we get quotes like this:
