I post on another board that I'm positive is visited by Russian propagandists. I'm not sure if it is actually people from Russia or if it is Americans they have unwittlingly (or wittingly) gotten to propagate their bullshit but it becomes really obvious. As the build up to invading Ukraine increased I actually asked him what would happen once the invasion happened. As it so happens, the day of the invasion that particular handle went silent and hasn't been heard from since. There have since been several others (they usually don't last very long on one account) and I'm pretty sure the Trump campaign is employing the same tactic to spread their complete bullshit. I'm guessing they are paid positions given how often they are posting. This is an Iowa board that gets quite a bit of traffic so given the Primaries, it is not unusual that it would be targeted for this stuff. Especially since Iowa is trying its best to become North Florida.

In an extraordinary meeting in the UN Security Council, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday called for Russia's veto power to be stripped -- an argument he has made previously, since Russia's invasion of his country in 2022.
Russia is one of five permanent members of the powerful Security Council, the so-called P5, that also includes the UK, France, the United States, and China. Ten other non-permanent members fill out the body on rotation. But only permanent members wield the power to veto resolutions.
In recent years, the Russian Federation and China have cast the overwhelming majority of vetoes, frequently doubling up on the same resolutions. Over the past 10 years, Russia has vetoed two dozen resolutions, China has vetoed nine, and the US has vetoed three.
Among these: In September 2022, Russia vetoed a draft resolution that would have condemned its seizure of Ukrainian territories and called on it to withdraw from Ukraine.
Russia's war in Ukraine and deepening geopolitical rivalries between the P5 have highlighted paralysis in the council, while major emerging powers like India and Brazil remain stuck on the sidelines.
In a speech opening the General Debate on Tuesday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres himself called for reform, pointing out that the Security Council was created in the 1940s, in a vastly different geopolitical context than today -- back when the seat currently held by Russia belonged to the USSR. The only alternative to reform, he warned, would be “rupture.”
But the odds of change seem slim for now. Any attempt to reform the Security Council would require the assent of the existing P5 members.

The Speaker of the House apologized Sunday for prompting standing ovations in the House of Commons for a man who served in a Nazi SS unit in Ukraine during the Second World War and was invited as a “Canadian hero” to hear Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s speech to parliamentarians.
Following Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s speech to Parliament on Friday, House of Commons Speaker Anthony Rota drew attention to a 98-year-old man from North Bay, Ont., named Yaraslov Hunka, who was seated in the chamber as an invited guest, and lauded him for “fighting for Ukraine independence against the Russians” during the Second World War.
“He is a Ukrainian hero and a Canadian hero, and we thank him for all his service,” Mr. Rota said. His comment prompted cheers and two standing ovations from the House of Commons, which included Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mr. Zelensky.
But Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies said in a statement on the weekend that the man served in the 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS, a Nazi military unit with documented evidence of “crimes against humanity” crimes during the Holocaust. “The fact that a veteran who served in a Nazi military unit was invited to and given a standing ovation in Parliament is shocking,” the group said, calling on the government to publicly apologize.
In a statement on Sunday, Mr. Rota said had “become aware of more information” that made him regret the decision to invite Mr. Hunka, who is from his riding, saying the “initiative was entirely my own.”
“I particularly want to extend my deepest apologies to Jewish communities in Canada and around the world. I accept full responsibility for my actions.”
A spokesperson from the Prime Minister’s Office said that “no advance notice was provided to the Prime Minister’s Office, nor the Ukrainian delegation, about the invitation or recognition.” The Speaker and the PMO operate independently, the spokesperson said, adding that Mr. Rota chose his own guests, and taking “full responsibility” was the “right thing to do.”
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, however, said Sunday that the prime minister also needed to “personally apologize” for what he called “an appalling error in judgement.” Mr. Poilievre pointed out that parliamentarians had no opportunity to vet the man’s past – a task for an important state visit that he said should have been handled by the Prime Minister’s Office. “Without warning or context, it was impossible for any parliamentarian in the room - other than Mr. Trudeau - to know of this dark past.”
The scene in Parliament will have potentially serious ramifications beyond Canada, said Ivan Katchanovski, a University of Ottawa political scientist who has published on the SS unit and is writing a book about the Ukraine war. He called the standing ovation “beyond comprehension.”
He pointed out that Russia has falsely used the “de-Nazification” of Ukraine as propaganda to gain support for its invasion of the country last year “This will be used by Russia in the war against Ukraine,” he said, suggesting that both Canadian politicians and Mr. Zelensky will need to quickly distance themselves from the scene in Parliament.
Dr. Katchanovski says that the 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS was renamed the First Ukrainian Division at the end of the war - a move to distance the unit from Nazi ties, and depict its members as fighting to protect Ukraine from a Russia invasion. But he said the volunteer unit was originally formed in 1943, after Germany lost the Battle of Stalingrad, under the Waffen SS, the combat branch of the Nazi Party’s paramilitary. Mr. Katchanovski says the unit has been linked to massacres of civilians carried out in villages in Poland. It has been a source of ongoing controversy in Ukraine, he says, with Mr. Zelenksy, who is Jewish, publicly condemning a march celebrating the unit that was held in Kyiv a few months before Russia’s invasion.
In a blog post, written in Ukrainian, on a website dedicated to the First Ukrainian Division, a writer named Yaroslav Hunka, from Canada, describes volunteering for the unit in 1943, when he was 18, fearing a Russian invasion with the German army planning a retreat from western Ukraine. In two weeks, the blog says, 80,000 volunteers joined the division, many students from his hometown. “We felt our duty to our native land - and left,” the author writes. The unit surrendered to the British Army at the end of the war.
“I do not want the reader to understand that my entire generation was ideologically motivated and spiritually conscious,” the author writes. “In a bag of healthy apples, there are also rotten ones. It will depend on the relationship between those two qualities of apples in the course of a given generation.”

I know our resident Putin propagandist won't be able to wrap his warped mind around it, even though it would be a useful perspective for him, so I share this for anyone else interested.
I came upon this opinion piece about a week ago, and have had it simmering in the back of my mind since. As the title goes, it's about where the world is heading after the decline of America as the sole superpower, and how some, like Silverblade, should be very careful what they wish for. The graph on the death rates in state-based conflicts was quite interesting, and I thought the whole bit was a worth while read.

Canada is in a tough spot with this. We've built our entire society around the idea that we will never really be in a serious military conflict without someone else coming to our aid and carrying the load. We're starting to see allies look at us the same way Big Brother alliances look at alliance members that cannot win competitions: useful when things are going well, but expendable when they are not.
Noah Smith’s opinion piece here takes a page from many other historians and political scientists. We're in a peaceful period because we have safe global trade and that is starting to erode due to America's decline in influence, declining/aging population, etc.
Peter Zeihan’s "The End of the World Is Just the Beginning" expands on this in detail. While the book is rather pessimistic, it does highlight the period of peace and how post-World War 2 America enabled slow, but large global trade through security. Without that security, global trade as we know it does not exist. Without global trade as we know it, we do not have the technology and comforts we have today.
The picture on that article sent me down a rabbit hole about the M777 howitzer. I wonder why, in the 21st century, it still uses a hand crank to change the angle of the barrel. I suppose there's something to be said for mechanical devices from a reliability standpoint, but there are already variants with digital fire control systems, so I wonder why the U.S. military hasn't adapted all of its 155mm guns to use it.

So, I have a dumb question. Maybe there's a simple answer I'm missing? Maybe there isn't one.
Republicans in general are all about getting financial aid to Israel. (Yeah, the House is trying to tie it to defunding the IRS lol, but set that aside for a sec.) They don't seem real concerned about helping Ukraine, because I don't know, Trump likes Putin? But they are all onboard for getting money to Israel. But isn't it also Republicans that look the other way from anti-Semitic slurs and hate crimes? Wasn't it Republicans marching with tiki torches at Charlottesville chanting "Jews will not replace us?" It's like they hate Jews but love Israel? It's so confusing. Is it different factions in the Republican party or? Best I can come up with is they hate Muslims more than they hate Jews but I really don't understand it. Seems like they hate everyone except authoritarians.
