Which I hear in Sam Kinison's voice, despite having talked to the gnome before.

That is because for the last several decades people are taught that there is only black and white, there are only 2 sides and the moment you critique even a small aspect of one side, you must be for the other side.

The Reports from the UN, from Human Rights watch or from Amnesty International over the last 6 years in regard to the situation in the eastern provinces of the Ukraine are no longer to be considered as a person living in a western nation, because you are supposed to be anti-Russia, because being anti-Putin simply is not enough anymore. And every little thing that might tarnish your own side should be ignored and forgotten.

I was joking to friends that maybe Russia should just join NATO themselves but apparently this is something that various parties have floated for decades.

Apparently Russia has decided that shelling a nuclear plant is a big brain idea.

They're already in this deep, why not go all the way? Until NATO intervenes militarily, what's the downside of escalation at this point for Russia?

I was going to respond in detail, but care to elaborate on what you mean by "going all the way" and "what's the downside of escalation?" I mean after attacking nuclear facilities and using banned weapons against civilians and other various war crimes... are you talking like nuking cities at this point?

On the other point, there's plenty NATO and the rest of the world can do that doesn't involve military intervention. A Russian oil and gas embargo is being discussed (but that would further back Putin into a corner and also have a harsh rippling effect on the global economy).

I'm talking anything and everything that could be an option for Russia.

Irradiating the region you wish to control and gain value from is a pretty terrible idea? Unless the goal of the attack is simply to cause as much damage to Ukraine as possible - and nothing we've seen, including the map of the attack plans and the statement they wanted to release after the attack succeeded, would indicate that - anything that damages the long-term productivity of the region should be a simple "no, of course you wouldn't do that". This is the sort of thing I'd expect from the Russians if they felt they were going to be forced out of the area, and right now that doesn't look like it's happening.

It's just an aggressive method of disinfecting the region from COVID.

Only if you care, which I'm not sure the Putin regime does.

If they follow the previous playbook for a meltdown, they'll just pour cement over it, fence off a 40 x 40 km area around the nuclear plant, call it another exclusion zone and then move on.

For Putin? Who knows -- probably none. The rest of Russia may be another story.

Former National Security Advisor John Bolton says 'Putin was waiting' for Trump to withdraw the United States from NATO in his second term

    • Former National Security Advisor John Bolton said Putin was "waiting" for Trump to withdraw the US from NATO.
    • He previously warned that Trump would have withdrawn from the alliance if he'd won a 2nd term.
    • Bolton also said Trump's "main interest" in Ukraine was trying to "find Hillary Clinton's computer server."

Former National Security Advisor John Bolton said on Friday that Russian President Vladimir Putin was waiting for former President Donald Trump to withdraw the United States from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization if he had won a second term.

Bolton made the remarks during a virtual event with the Washington Post on the Russian invasion of Ukraine, where Bolton mostly offered critiques of current President Joe Biden's foreign policy in the region. At the end of the event, he was asked by the Post's Michael Duffy about how close Trump came to withdrawing the country from NATO, a transatlantic security alliance that includes the United States, Canada, and most of Europe.

"I thought he put his foot over it, but at least he didn't withdraw then," said Bolton, who wrote in his memoir about Trump's consideration of withdrawing from NATO in 2018. "In a second Trump term, I think he may well have withdrawn from NATO. And I think Putin was waiting for that."

Trump viewed NATO as a liability during his presidency, believing that European countries were not paying enough of their fair share of the burden of providing defense to the alliance. Bolton, a State Department official during the George W. Bush administration, was brought on to be Trump's national security advisor in 2018 only to be ousted a year and a half later.

Bolton's latest comments come just days after he told Newsmax that Trump "barely knew where Ukraine was," pushing back on a host who said the former president had been "tough on Russia."

Asked whether he was satisfied by how the Trump administration handled Ukraine, Bolton criticized his former boss.

"I think it went very badly," said Bolton. "It was hard to have discussions on geostrategic issues when the president's main interest was getting... Rudy Giuliani in to see [Ukrainian President Volodymyr] Zelensky so they could go find Hillary Clinton's computer server.

He added that Ukraine's position in the "maelstrom of American presidential politics" in the last few years made it difficult for Zelensky to establish a proper relationship with the United States, which Bolton said was Ukraine's "potentially most important supporter."

Trump was impeached for the first time over his withholding of $400 million in military aid to Ukraine in order to pressure Zelensky to launch an investigation into Biden and his son Hunter over allegations of corruption.

Bolton said on Friday that former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and former Defense Secretary Mark Esper were concerned by Trump's behavior at the time. "All of us felt that we needed to bolster Ukraine's security, and were appalled at what Trump was doing," he said.
They may have been "concerned and appalled", but at the time they kept quiet about it like good little minions...

Just to be clear, actively supporting an enemy's plans to take over the world wasn't enough to say anything. But money? They'll do it in a heartbeat.

    I'm hoping you roll a natural 20 here, not a 1.

(I'm even being nice and ignoring the terms of Ukraine's agreement to surrender its nuclear weapons to Russia (1994 Budapest Memorandum), in exchange for "security assurances against threats or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of Ukraine, Belarus, and Kazakhstan.")

Just a reminder that bandwagoning isn't just an American thing, we just do it better...

Parisian restaurant receives threats after people thought Poutine dish was named after Putin

A Paris restaurant has been hit with threats by customers who thought its signature dish poutine was named after the Russian president Vladimir Putin.

Poutine, which consists of French fries and cheese curds topped with gravy, is particularly popular in Canada and France.

But La Maison de la Poutine, or the House of Poutine, claimed it had received “calls of insults and even threats” over the dish.

The row appears to have come about because when said aloud, the words Poutine and Putin sound similar.

In a statement, the business, which has branches in Paris and Toulouse, said: “Our dish was born in Quebec in the 1950s. And the stories to tell its origin are numerous.

“But one thing is certain: poutine was created by passionate cooks who wanted to bring joy and comfort to their customers.

“The House of Poutine has worked since its first day to perpetuate these values and today brings its most sincere support to the Ukrainian people who are courageously fighting for their freedom against the tyrannical Russian regime.”

In Quebec, Canada, one restaurant temporarily renamed Poutine on its menu as a gesture of solidarity with Ukraine.

Le Roy Jucep wrote in a Facebook post it was changing the name to “la frite fromage sauce” which translates to “the fry cheese gravy”.

A number of companies have renamed or altered products in solidarity with the Ukrainian people, including in the UK.

The Co-op will no longer sell Russian Standard vodka, the supermarket announced last week.

A spokesperson said: “In response to the ongoing invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces and as a sign of solidarity with the people of Ukraine, we have taken the decision to remove from sale Russian-made vodka.

Meanwhile, Sainsbury’s said it would also drop the vodka while renaming its chicken kievs to chicken kyiv in a display of solidarity with Ukraine.

The supermarket said last week it would donate two million to help Ukrainian refugees and it would match charitable donations made through its Nectar app, up to a maximum of £500,000.
