Re: The Graffe's Celebrity Death Pool
Former Congressman John Dingell (D-Michigan) and longest serving representative ever has died in Dearborn, Mi. at the age of 92.
He was a page in Congress when Roosevelt delivered the Day of Infamy Speech, and rose to Congress on his father's death in 1955, following his father's efforts working in Congress to achieve Medicare in the 1960's (and never gave up on his family's fight for Universal Health Care in the US) and some of the first and most impactful environmental protection regulations.
Obama's 2014 SOTU was Dingell's last in office. He allowed Nancy Pelosi to use the gavel he used when he presided over the House when Medicare was passed when she presided over the passage of Obamacare.

Surf guitar pioneer Dick Dale, whose song Misirlou played over the opening credits to Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction, has died aged 81.
Dale was known for his blindingly fast strumming style, which inspired acts like The Beach Boys and Jimi Hendrix.
He said the sound reminded him of the rumble and crash of the waves, and the noises of marine animals as he surfed in California.
Dale's bassist Sam Bolle confirmed the star had died on Saturday night.
The cause of death is not yet known, but the guitarist had a long history of ill health, including renal failure, diabetes and cancer.

He's one of the greatest writers the English language has ever produced. And yeah, I've praised him as such several times on this board, but this post probably summarizes things for me (at least up to that point in time; he wrote a few after that).
Part of me feels very down about hearing of his death. The other part of me realizes that if quality of work keeps someone alive, then Wolfe will outlive almost anyone past, present and future.

Was gobsmacked at how damn good the first book of the New Sun was...after that...meh...I felt, alas, it wasn't really GOING any places :(
Incredibly evocative and inventive though
One that really upset me was death of Sterling E Lanier before he got to finish the third book of HIERO'S JOURNEY, which is IMHO, one of the most iconic ScifFi/post apocalypse novels ever written, and I have the 1st Ed AD&D DMG for suggesting in it's bibliography!
Another book that kind of puts me in mind of Shadow of the Torturer, is Fred Saberhagen's "Empire of the East"
I find the first novel of that SO damn heart-breaking in odd ways, so far ahead in time and change, that the folks don't recognize a tank for what it is, sigh :(

Former Green Bay Packers quarterback Bart Starr has died at the age of 85.
Starr, who suffered a major stroke in 2014, played for the Packers from 1956-71 and led them to five championships.
That included the first two Super Bowls, in 1967 and 1968, when he was named the game's most valuable player.
"His true legacy will always be the respectful manner in which he treated every person he met, his humble demeanour, and his generous spirit," read a family statement.
"He battled with courage and determination to transcend the serious stroke he suffered, but his most recent illness was too much to overcome."
After retiring as a player, Starr coached the Packers from 1975-83 although they only reached the play-offs once during his tenure.
Starr last visited Lambeau Field in 2017 to take part in the festivities commemorating the 50-year anniversary of the Packers' 1967 championship.

I used to watch Cub's baseball on WGN all the time when I was in college and he was playing for them. Sucks he will live on in infamy for that one ground ball, even though he was a damn good hitter. I saw a graphic yesterday that showed between 1970 and 1989 the only player with more hits than Buckner was Pete Rose.
