I like this from the article: The public is sometimes shocked to discover that musicians in famous bands didn't play on their records, "but not everybody can be a plumber and go fix a broken pipe," he told the Times in 2000. “Sometimes you need an expert, and that's all there is to it."

Surf guitar pioneer Dick Dale, whose song Misirlou played over the opening credits to Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction, has died aged 81.
Dale was known for his blindingly fast strumming style, which inspired acts like The Beach Boys and Jimi Hendrix.
He said the sound reminded him of the rumble and crash of the waves, and the noises of marine animals as he surfed in California.
Dale's bassist Sam Bolle confirmed the star had died on Saturday night.
The cause of death is not yet known, but the guitarist had a long history of ill health, including renal failure, diabetes and cancer.
Today we sail
On the Solar Rail
For there's much we just don't know
So farewell with a kiss
Then it's fast for the mist
Till we're sleeping in the cold below
81 ain't bad for a rock star with the trifecta of health issues.
Msirlou is a tough one. I have only played with two guitarists who could play it at full tempo.
Georgia Engel, the mother-in-law from "Everybody Loves Raymond" and Georgette on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show", 70:

I read The Book of the New Sun some years ago at the recommendation of this forum, maybe from Ppatty. I should probably read it again at some point, as I find my memory of it very vague, but remember liking it.
He's one of the greatest writers the English language has ever produced. And yeah, I've praised him as such several times on this board, but this post probably summarizes things for me (at least up to that point in time; he wrote a few after that).
Part of me feels very down about hearing of his death. The other part of me realizes that if quality of work keeps someone alive, then Wolfe will outlive almost anyone past, present and future.
Thanks, I think I'll try Latro in the Mist.
I loved the New Sun trilogy as well, but it's been way too long since I read it... need to add that to the read pile again.
Article from 2015....
Generalissimo Francisco Franco is also still dead.
Mark Medoff, 79. Not a huge celebrity, but he did pen 'Children of a Lesser God', which he won a Tony award for, and was also made into a movie. I post him because he was a legend at my alma mater.

Was gobsmacked at how damn good the first book of the New Sun was...after that...meh...I felt, alas, it wasn't really GOING any places
Incredibly evocative and inventive though
One that really upset me was death of Sterling E Lanier before he got to finish the third book of HIERO'S JOURNEY, which is IMHO, one of the most iconic ScifFi/post apocalypse novels ever written, and I have the 1st Ed AD&D DMG for suggesting in it's bibliography!
Another book that kind of puts me in mind of Shadow of the Torturer, is Fred Saberhagen's "Empire of the East"
I find the first novel of that SO damn heart-breaking in odd ways, so far ahead in time and change, that the folks don't recognize a tank for what it is, sigh
Misirlou is one of the outstanding guitar works, IMHO
DAMN it has "balls"! (and after Pulp Fiction, hahaha, it's truly iconic!)
grew up with Mum always playing The Shadows, Beach Boys, Fleetwood Mack etc *totally* love suvh stuff (along with synth music, ok so I'm weird)
sigh so many greats going.

Noone should sue or be sued ambiguously.
Found a clip with some of his antics.
The basketball skills for tricks were awesome, but you always had to watch everything or you'd miss the theater and their adoration for their fans.

I somehow doubt social media would be kind to the "Take off your shoes, Moses!" moment that's in there with the kid on the front row seats, though.
