That trailer did not take my breath away.
If this is in IMAX and the flying shots are long and not franticfrequent, it could be a fun watch just for the flight scenes.
That trailer did not take my breath away.
I was wondering who they would cast in the role before remembering that Tom Cruise is a lich. (I assumed this was another remake, not a sequel)
I'm with Mileron. I'm not sure what they could do interesting with the story short of ripping off Macross Plus, but few other movies have stoked the romanticism of flying for me.
Saw it today. If anything, it's more Top Gunnier than the original Top Gun, and it works really well. Yeah, the mission premise is ridiculous, the main attack itself is pretty much ripped from Star Wars, the geopolitics are as naive as ever and the dogfighting is total bullshit -- and none of that matters in the least because the flight sequences thrill, the dialogue moves along without being cheesy and the actors acquit themselves ably. If you watch a Top Gun movie expecting combat verisimilitude, that's your own fault.
More than anything, the character development here shines. The portrayal of middle-aged Maverick feels spot on. The romance angle with Jennifer Connelly is more believable than the one with Kelly McGillis, with a better set-up, a firmer foundation in the story and more depth. And the source of Rooster's antipathy makes perfect sense.
Even the considerable amount of fan service/callbacks enhances the narrative. The scene with Iceman feels emotionally true, perhaps because it's art imitating life. And although the last dogfight with the 5th-gen fighters is laughably Hollywood, the idea of Maverick bringing in the old warhorse for one last carrier landing is sentimental in the best of ways -- this is, after all, the sequel to a movie that was basically one big ball of sentimentality. If that's not your thing, you'll want to avoid this; highly recommended otherwise for anyone in the mood for a well-made summer entertainment.
I did not see this in IMAX or 3D (is there even a 3D version?) or those newfangled seats that shake and rumble. I suspect that this movie greatly benefits from those, though.

Might be good you saw it when you did, the heirs of the man who wrote the article the original Top Gun was based on are trying to get it pulled from theaters based on their claim that Paramount had lost the copyright.

In fairness to the plaintiffs, it should be noted that they formally notified Paramount in 2018 that they would be withdrawing the rights in 2020, so the studio also had plenty of time to work something out and chose not to. And a cease-and-desist letter was delivered to Paramount last month, two weeks before the movie was released.
The lawsuit itself couldn't be filed before the movie release. The plaintiffs need to cite specific examples of how the film violates the copyright, which requires watching the movie. Neither the family nor their representatives were invited to any advance screenings, so they really did have to wait until the movie came out.
Paramount's initial counterargument is that the movie was essentially done before the copyright was withdrawn in 2020. There may be some merit to this, given that principal shooting was completed before 2020.
The studio could also argue that it never needed the copyright in the first place because the movies are works of fiction, and Yonay's magazine article was not. A case also could be made that even if the first movie needed the copyright, the second one did not, since it's a new story. (I'd have a tough time accepting that last one without also accepting the first half because without the first movie, the second one never exists)

The movie itself is truly a cinematic marvel.
I took the whole family to watch the film in CJ4DX (read star tours) and it was an experience I could compare only to California soaring and star tours, including the much hyper but seldom experience "snowing in the theater."
We had a blast.
Highly recommend.
This lawsuit hasn't got a chance. New story.
Get ready for a trilogy:
'Top Gun 3' officially confirmed, Tom Cruise to return
I was skeptical about the 2nd film and I was happy to be wrong. I am not skeptical this time; I'm not expecting an all-time great film, but I trust it will be entertaining.
