Co-creator or Schoolhouse Rock. I still love to watch these sometimes, the songs they had were all pretty good, at least for me.

This guy might have had more influence on offensive football than anyone else over the past 30 years:

Mississippi State coach Mike Leach dies after hospitalization (espn.com)

The vast majority of FBS and NFL offenses use at least some of the Air Raid principles popularized by Leach.

Didn't see this coming. Was never a fan because he was a Steeler back when they were in the same division as the Oilers, but there's no question he was a great player.

But did the ball Tatum first or Fuqua first? And did it touch the ground?

If there were a Mt. Rushmore of Global Sports Icons, Pele would be on it. I doubt there has ever been a more famous or more celebrated athlete in the world.

I was just thinking about that, and totally agree. Back when he was playing in New York even I, a kid from South Texas that was playing football (our football), knew who he was and how damn good he was at his sport (reading Sports Illustrated did help with that I admit).

I was triggered by this comment. Muhammad Ali sprung to my mind instantly . He had some controversies though so you could be right.

I rank Michael Jordan pretty high on that short list as well, but I suppose he wasn't quite the global phenomenon.

Those are the other two I'd have on the mountain. They may very well be on Pele's level of recognition and adoration, but I have a hard time thinking there's something beyond that, at least for athletes.
