    Interesting Upcoming Games: 2019

2018 was a fairly solid year. Some really good games, some really disappointing games, and everything in between. With 2018 behind us, it's time to look forward and see what we have to look forward to in 2019. It could potentially be a pretty big year, though the last half is as always obscured in fog.

First a summary of some of the bigger releases expected this year:

    Resident Evil 2
    Kingdom Hearts 3
    Crackdown 3
    Metro Exodus
    Anthem
    Devil May Cry 5
    The Division 2
    Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
    Mortal Kombat 11
    Days Gone
    Rage 2
    Gears 5
    Luigi's Mansion 3
    Psychonauts 2
    Skull & Bones
    Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
    Yoshi's Crafted World
    Nioh 2

Potential releases, some of these are really long shots so don't hold your breath:

    Doom Eternal
    Fire Emblem: Three Houses
    Beyond Good and Evil 2
    Dying Light 2
    Death Stranding
    Cyberpunk 2077
    Ghost of Tsushima
    The Last of Us 2
    Bayonetta 3
    Starfield
    Metroid Prime 4
    Final Fantasy 7 Remake
    Halo Infinite

To top it off there is good reason to believe that the next generation of consoles may be announced in 2019. Sony's behavior in particular has been very strange. They haven't announced anything new in over a year. At E3 they showed off their last four big titles and then proceeded to skip every other gaming event for the rest of the year. They also said they would not be going to E3 next year. That leaves a huge gap with no new information on anything; it's very strange. There's a good chance some of these titles are being shifted towards whatever the PS5 ends up being.

For their part Microsoft has officially confirmed they are building towards their new console. They've also stated that they want their games playable on anything. I think they want to turn Xbox into a service, with streaming at the heart and center. Sony already tried something similar but it failed to catch on. Microsoft has the benefit of already being in a similar tech space in other parts of their company however. They've also acquired new studios in an attempt to catch up to Sony's exclusive dominance.

This all puts Nintendo in a weird place yet again. The chances of them making a more powerful (rather than a cheaper) Switch is low. The Switch has been the closest thing to platform parity Nintendo has had in awhile (meaning major third party multiplatform releases). Will they be left behind again? Or will consoles finally have low/medium/high options like PC games, depending on which platform you get it on? I don't know what their flagship title is going to be this year, but we will probably find out in their next Direct. Pokemon, Animal Crossing, and Metroid Prime 4 are the major contenders.

So is there anything in particular in 2019 you are really looking forward to?

I'm not sure myself. I would say The Last of Us 2 and Ghost of Tsuhima, but if I'm right about them being PS5 games it may be worth waiting. It's not like there is a shortage of 2017 and 2018 games that I haven't played yet.

I think I'm most curious about Fallen Order. It's been too long since we have had a good Star Wars game. I'm curious about Anthem, but I guarantee it won't run on my PC. Also, Square you have been fooling around long enough, finish FF7 already. It's just a dang remake, you really need to learn how to set manageable goals.

    Re: Interesting Upcoming Games: 2019

And this is where you will find the three month forecast. I primarily update and use this for the monthly threads. Game release dates change all the time, and so it's more convenient for me if I don't have to constantly shuffle things around as much.

This year we see the retirement of the Vita category, as Sony is officially discontinuing support. I might have kept it around for all the niche Japanese games with cross-platform releases but even those seem to be drying up.

The 3DS is still relevant because Nintendo promotes it as it's budget option for kids. It might be on the chopping block for category retirement however as there are very, very few announced games for it in 2019.

Unless something changes, the rest should work the same way it did last year. Multiplatform will continue to be a category designation for games that come out on all three of the following platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox. If a game is exclusive, or comes out on only 2 out of 3 of these they will be listed in their own categories. While the Switch does get a lot of multiplatform games it isn't complete parity and so it's category will list both its exclusives and the games that come out on other systems.

    Re: Interesting Upcoming Games: 2019

It's become fairly standard to expect Nintendo to release a new Direct in January as a way of telling people what to expect in the upcoming year, but this year's has been strangely absent. At around the time there would be a Direct they uploaded a lot of trailers with some being minor announcements (Dragon's Dogma coming to Switch). Nintendo fans have also been eagerly waiting for them to finally show some footage from Metroid Prime 4, which they announced a year or two ago.

Instead, Nintendo released what basically amounts to an apology video. In it they say that the quality of the game currently in development does not meet their standards and that they are basically starting over from the beginning, but this time enlisting the aid of Retro Studios (which made the previous ones).

So you can safely assume that that game is not coming out this year, and this decision is probably why we haven't seen anything new from Nintendo since Smash. This was probably their next big thing and now they need to pivot to something else.

    Re: Interesting Upcoming Games: 2019

As part of whatever Star Wars celebration that is going on right now, they hosted a panel and finally revealed in-game (but not gameplay) footage of Respawn's Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. They promised the combat feels good but didn't show any of it. They mostly teased the story and talked about how amazing it was to be able to make this.

Protagonist is a padawan that escaped the purging of the Jedi. His name is Cal Kestis. He is hiding by never relying on his force powers, until the inevitable point where he does so by instinct and gets caught in the process. They teased that the lightsaber he eventually uses is not his own, but they don't reveal who it actually belongs to. They have adapted the idea of Inquisitors from Star Wars Rebels and added in the concept of Purge Troopers to go along with them. An Inquisitor seems to be the chief antagonist at this stage, though the cynic in me thinks she will be a love interest as well.

They also briefly introduced the droid sidekick to the main character. (not shown in trailer, but in promotional art)

Reminds me of Jedi Knight II. Cal Kyle Cal Kyle. Start with no powers, get powers, get lightsaber. Enemies progress accordingly.

    Re: Interesting Upcoming Games: 2019

Death Stranding gets a release date trailer in the build up to E3. Release date is set at November 8, 2019. It's still delightfully weird.

Ubisoft announces their next Ghost Recon game, Breakpoint, due in October of 2019. The new features seem to largely consist of survival mechanics, similar to Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. You have to manage fatigue, hunger, thirst. Maintain your weapons. Find resources, etc.

Game Informer - Everything You Need to Know About Ghost Recon Breakpoint

Tomorrow there is supposed to be a big Call of Duty reveal. Supposedly they are rebooting Modern Warfare.

P.S. I almost forgot the most important thing. The collector's edition for Death Stranding will include your very own statue of a "bridge baby". I typically don't care for dumb CE extras, but this feels like mandatory home decor to me. The thought of freaking out people foolish enough to visit is hilarious to me.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare announced with a release date set for October 25th.

Reboot of the franchise. New engine. Single player story heavily emphasized, this time telling a story from both sides of the conflict. Co-op is returning. Crossplay between PC and consoles. Free map packs.

It looks good, though I'm always surprised by how much fans care about the characters in these games. Heck, calling them characters seems overly generous.

Animal Crossing has been delayed to 2020.

What I find most interesting about this is one of their explanations for why.

Apparently Nintendo has claimed they don't want to put their employees through crunch and is emphasizing their health. This is interesting to me because it means those big stories from earlier in the year might actually be having an effect for the better.
