Seattle ICE attorney gets prison time for stealing identities of aliens

A former Seattle-based attorney for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement was sentenced to four years in prison for wire fraud and an identity theft scheme that used the identities of several aliens. Federal prosecutors say he used ICE databases and computers to commit his crimes.

Raphael A. Sanchez, 44, is the former chief counsel for ICE's Office of Principal Legal Advisor, according to the Department of Justice.

Sanchez pleaded guilty in February to one count of wire fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft, according to a statement from DOJ. Sanchez was also ordered to pay over $190,000 in restitution -- the amount prosecutors say he stole using fraudulent credit card accounts he opened.

"Raphael Sanchez was entrusted with overseeing the honest enforcement of our country's immigration laws," said Acting Assistant Attorney General John Cronan in a statement. "Instead, Sanchez abused that trust, and capitalized on his position at ICE to exploit his victims and line his own pockets."

DOJ said Sanchez admitted to intentionally defrauding aliens in various stages of immigration removal proceedings. Sanchez allegedly used their identities to open lines of credit and personal loans. He also manipulated credit bureau files, transferred funds to himself and made purchases in using credit cards obtained in the names of his victims.

Sanchez admitted that he obtained the information using ICE's computer database, and used his work computer to forge Social Security cards and Washington state driver's licenses, according to DOJ. He also listed his address as the aliens' home addresses on the accounts he opened.

Prosecutors say Sanchez also listed the names of three aliens as dependents on tax returns.

Wish this story gave a timeline for his criminal activities. That is, does the emboldment of ICE since Trump influence this guy or was he just plain a bastard for a long period?

I heard the young, hot shot New York candidate that upset the incumbent was calling for the abolishment of ICE. I was curious what others here thought of that. Too radical, or justified? I lean pretty far left myself, but that seemed a bit over the top to me...

Unfortunately, the GOP has done a tremendous job dragging the goalposts to the right over the last three decades, while simultaneously selling the lie that they've actually moved to the left. Democrats going to the extreme left right now is not a good idea and sets them up for failure, both in the midterms and the 2020 presidential election.

The only way to claw back to something resembling the center is to get plenty of strong, YOUNG, moderate democrats (REAL moderate democrats, not republican lights like so many Democrats are now) to start running with non-radical policy agendas. Ocasio-Cortez is the result of the left's anger at conservatives effectively stealing the country from them, but her plans are just too extreme for the current political landscape in this country that has emboldened bigots, racists, and misogynists - agendas like hers will push critical independent votes towards the right, which is the last thing we need right now.

Its a sad case of what we need must be put on hold so we can get what we REALLY need - the GOP out of power and the minority party, which they would already be if there were TRULY fair elections in this country.

I hope the dems don't embrace the far left as their rallying point, which Cortez's winning shows can happen in this atmosphere of hyper partisanship and anger - if they do we'll see Trump win again in 2020. Want to win back the white house? Find a white male democrat younger than 60 that is a moderate. Sad truth. Maybe in a few decades we'll be ready for a female president or a true democratic socialist, but now? No.
The more I learn the more I realize I have yet to learn.
