Oh well maybe they will pull it off, Or it will be a complete shit show and the ME will never get another cup.
It doesn't matter if they pull it off now. It's already so tainted. I didn't even touch on the slave labor they used to build the stadiums.

Russia as a location was already disgusting. Qatar.... Ugh.

Why is it important for sports events to take place in "good" countries?

It's more about the underhanded way they went about doing it that bothers me. If FIFA openly advertised that votes were for sale and be ready to pay people off to get the rights to host then I wouldn't have as much of an issue with it (I wouldn't like it, but at least they are up front about it). The whole indentured servitude thing really bothers me as well. Not that Obama did anything about it and we know that the current administration won't do anything about it.

    Food for thought :

What could our administration do about it besides barring or country's participation in the event?

While this situation in Qatar is FUBAR, what control would we have over a commercial sporting event?

They can prevent the team from going and that's about it.

Right, and soccer is probably the only organization whose supporters would sign off on it.

Well, maybe olympic committee as well; we did that for the olympics of 1936, right?

    Oh wait... They went.

No, we skipped the Olympics in 1980. The USSR and Soviet bloc countries boycotted the Olympics in 1984 in retaliation.
