Where is the link to donate? Is there a post somewhere about the fund raiser or just the bar at the top?

It takes 4+ hours to run an optimize, so you can pretty much assume each time the servers have been down for an extended period that is what has happened We don't have a lot of churn on the top end, but it's been around 18 months since the last time I optimized them. The first time I optimized them it would have taken around 36 hours, since Rackspace hadn't optimized their mysql configuration yet. That ended up timing out and corrupting the database which forced a restore. And a restore is the best optimization.

    Re: Finances and Administration

Anyone have a lot of database experience that can talk with me about database partitioning?

After poking around I think I can get us running on Linode fairly easily, but I'll need to work out the best method to partition the database. And since I work in a field that can just say "BUY MOAR RAM!" I really have no idea how to do it.

Basically I think if I had some forgiveness in dealing with the server being shit for a few weeks of tuning I could get us onto a linode server for $25/month.

Aside from the transient (inconsequential) inconvenience, what would this cost us in terms of performance or function?

The search function would be the shittier version of Search you usually get on most other vBulletin sites (slower, no full text options, etc). That's it.

Oh, and if we get enough to survive we'll be switching to XenForo. vBulletin is charging for the new version of the software, and since the software (4.0) is still a steaming pile of shit, I refuse to ever give them money again.

I'm not a database guy, I might be able to talk to a few next week. Until then, what I've seen is that DB sharding is typically built into the application. If VB doesn't support it natively, then assuming you can find the right strategy for splitting up the tables you'll need to find some intermediate 3rd party software to inspect and route the queries, like spock proxy.

Also, why not stay on VB3? I've been pretty happy with it, and most of the new features even in 3 are really not that important anyway. Are they dropping security/update support?

Because we're on vB4. As Nadiar says, its a steaming pile of shit.

Sharding and Partitioning are two different things. Partitioning basically sets aside a chunk of the database, so that at any given time it only has to load a small chunk of a table instead of loading an entire table.

Yeah, if you actually look at the code generating each page it's awful. You know when you're programming and creating a new version of software how you'll start with the old version, but at some point your code is just full of workarounds to get the old shit and new shit working together so you have to back and clean it all up before it's even remotely ready for release? They've never done that cleanup. When you're in the admin panel, there are tons of options you can click on that have a warning saying the feature doesn't work in vB 4.0.

Right now I'm sort of thinking that when we upgrade to xF I might not import the archive (older than 2 years) posts. I'll just leave vB running as an archive. After a year or so I imagine we could just switch the archive to a shared host if we really needed to keep it around ($120/year)

I want to float out there that I could trim 25% of our database by removing the MMO Archives (EQ/Vanguard). I've been avoiding it because I thought people would be against it, but it would definitely make finding cheaper hosting easier. If we trimmed our posts down to the last 2 years we'd fit just about anywhere fairly easily.

Sorry, I guess the point was: whatever might be a steaming pile of shit, the forum works the way it is. Does the version of the software we use have annual license fees associated with it? Will Xenforo help solve the database size issue? How much does Xenforo cost? What are the data migration risks? What features will we lose? What features will we gain?

As the administrator responsible for the software I'm certainly inclined to defer to Nadiar, especially since I have no experience running forum software myself, but playing devil's advocate for a moment, simply calling it VB "steaming pile of shit" is not a compelling case when, from an end-user perspective, the software works just fine.

Firefox 3 might have been a "steaming pile of shit" according to the developers who went and broke a whole bunch of features and snuck the major upgrade to version one million or whatever they're on now on people who didn't want it or weren't ready. Because you know, IE6 and everything. Have to push forward and imitate chrome. If I wanted to use chrome I'd be using chrome (and am certainly more likely to switch now that firefox offers less). If I wanted to use reddit I'd be using reddit (I still think creating r/graffe isn't a bad idea).

I'd really prefer Nadiar not arbitrarily make that decision without explaining it a little better, but whatever.
