    Discussion Topic Question

I have a thread I'd like to start that describes how to hack an Xbox and run emulators on it. There are some potential pitfalls, but I want to make sure I am not violating the rules of the forums. Everything I've found doesn't seem to obstruct this content - it seems that I could even link to (illegal) ROM depots, if I wanted to?

I don't want to. That's not the point of my potential thread.

I'd like to discuss the mechanical process, how to achieve it, and link to the xbox-scene.com forums, where strict rules about post content are enforced as well (no porn, no ROMs, etc).

Anything I should be concerned about?

Goes in hobby house, don't link directly illegal roms.
What do you despise? By this are you truly known.

It is only when the well nears dry do we think to ration supply.

    Re: Discussion Topic Question

It was determined to fall under rule 0, where you can't break our Terms of Service (which are basically: don't do anything that is illegal in Texas).

Don't link directly to roms, emulator BIOS, or the official Microsoft Dashboard. And you can't openly advocate piracy in that thread, or threads that link to that thread.
Good Example: "Download AID (for download locations, go to http://www.aidtracker.com/)"
Bad Example: "Download this AID package here(direct link), it will install roms and emulators for most gaming systems!"
Bad Example 2: "Oh, you want to play pirated games? Well if you look at this guide I wrote earlier this year, it will show you how"

Basically, don't be dumb There are more than enough legal reasons to hack your xbox that there shouldn't be a requirement

The DMCA actually puts this into a grey area, since we've been legally allowed to break the copy protections on the system since Microsoft stopped selling and supporting it (so that we can make and play archived copies of our games). Personally I think emulation should fall into the same category, but the roms get a lot trickier, since you're not making the archive yourself, and a lot of rom games are available in newer formats (thus they're still being supported).

Beyond that, if we get a DMCA takedown request for the thread we will comply with it.

    Re: Discussion Topic Question

I'll stick to a how-to, and less of a "where to get..." type of thread. The Purpose is to encourage the community to mod an old console into usefulness, not to spread piracy or illegal dissemination of ROMs. I'll provide references obliquely for those that are more interested (see Good Example, above).

Thanks for the feedback. It's possible this is more interesting to me than to other readers. Nonetheless, it was a fun adventure, and I want to share
