Re: The "What Are You Playing Now?" Thread
I finally ordered Fallout 3 yesterday. Not sure how I missed that one.
But then I'm really past the "shiny new game, must have, price no issue" phase currently... instead I wait until prices come waaaay down.
Still haven't finished Uncharted (1), not buying Uncharted2 before that. And I have probably five+ other games finished anywhere from 10% to 90% sitting in line too...

Oh I did take a look but I don't think that will help me much, being on the PS3 and all...
Still, 18 quid, shipping to Germany included, not going to complain. From what I've seen + read so far, I might enjoy it.

Dragon Age. Partway through Uncharted 2 and Brutal Legend. All on PS3

OTOH, this thread make me kick myself for not having a PS3 right now (oh well, not working so can't afford one anyway).

Re: The "What Are You Playing Now?" Thread
I have friends who used to play EQ with me for years asking me what the next game is. Sadly, it seems like we are going to revert to WoW for a bit.
Surely there has to be something at this point to step up and fill that MMORPG void.
EQ was 1999. WoW was 2004. It's been five years. We are due the next big thing! :)
Is there anything even remotely good on the horizon for EQ/WoW exiles?

Knights of the Old Republic mmo is the only one I would put any faith in. Although there is also a superhero one based on the DC Universe (I think?) that might last 6 months. :p
Did you try Aion, or whatever?

Re: The "What Are You Playing Now?" Thread
Finally finished Assassin's Creed (1) after a long pause... well, I did finish the storyline. Not going back to collect hundres of flags, I don't think.
AC2 was up for 44€ here, good deal for a new game, but I think I'm holding out some more.
Uncharted (1) might be next on my list of games I started and never finished... got a few hours to kill this week.
edit: went and bought AC2 anyway... couldn't resist.

Re: The "What Are You Playing Now?" Thread
I think i go through periodic gaming binges, but i'm not currently on one. However, i do log into Gods and Idols here and there, a beta mmorts somewhat reminiscent of 3D realtime galactic Utopia (Intellivision) ; and Last Chaos once in a while when i'm really in a masochistic mood. Actually checked out DDO a few days ago, but haven't put much time into it, although it does seem cooler than some others i've played. Other than that, Age of Mythology: The Titans is still kinda fun, and even GTA: SA once in a while, when the mood hits. Kitten Cannon can be a good time, reminds me of Human Cannonball on Atari 2600, but even better than that is Nanaca Crash. Actually, that game's pretty darn fun, come to think of it. I think i'll go play some now. Ciao!

Re: The "What Are You Playing Now?" Thread
I finished Dead Space for the first time and I can say without a doubt that it has the best sound design of any game I have ever played.
I immediately started again on new game+ and it's still frightening.
Teasers just started showing up for the sequel, and apparently the same studio is making Dante's Inferno which just upped my interest in what looked like a generic brawler.

Re: The "What Are You Playing Now?" Thread
Zelda Spirit Tracks is better than Phantom Hour Glass; It's really top notch. I loathed the boat in PHG, and was skeptical of the train in Z: ST, but it actually works quite well. There seems to be a bit more writing and dialogue in ST than in an average Zelda, it's cute and note exactly Dragon Age caliber, but its good for what it is. It's the 1st Zelda in a long time that's felt like a real Zelda to me.*
*I'm only about 2 hours in, so these are initial impresions.
-
Re: The "What Are You Playing Now?" Thread
You cad! How do you keep getting everything early!? :p
I'll be starting Spirit Tracks whenever it gets here. On the PC/console front I think I've finally had enough of Dragon Age, after attempting to play every Origin. Need to pick something short to play next. Deciding between Assassin's Creed (first one), Indigo Prophecy, Battallion Wars 2 (wii), or Muramasa.

-
Re: The "What Are You Playing Now?" Thread
Depending on which version of the game you got you might be able to "uncensor" it yourself. Open Indigo Prophecy.ini and change the line USMode= from 1 to 0. This doesn't work with all versions of the game, though (the option is known to be completely removed from the Steam release).

Re: The "What Are You Playing Now?" Thread
On the shelf right now:
Prince of Persia (PS3) - they started a "software pyramid" thing like all other systems already have, games are €20 on there. Has some new-ish stuff too (Mirror's Edge for example, can't remember much else atm). In addition to the Platinum deals this is really cool.
So I picked this up and it's not been in the drive once.
SBK 08
Not too bad so far, but ordered MotoGP 08 too, it just doesn't "kick" me the right way. Did some of the time trial things, but will end up spending most of the time in carreer mode.
Still playing Fallout 3, I'm not very far through the storyline I think... just arrived at GNR, level 7.5 so far. I keep running out of ammo and caps. Yes I know to use V.A.S.T. or whatever it's called, still running out of ammo. Been getting better with the money problem since I found out how to repair my own stuff though. Fucking n00blet.
Need for Speed: Shift
Ridiculously cheap as a UK import already, like €35 for a game that's barely a month or two old and that retailed at €70 or so at release. Couldn't resist. The wait for GT5 is too long.
Eagerly awaiting this in the mail in fact... should arrive monday at the latest.
That said, where are all the racing game (sim?) fans? I can't be alone...
-
Re: The "What Are You Playing Now?" Thread
The cinematic atmosphere of Indigo Prophecy is pretty cool/interesting, but I loathe the quicktime events. I appreciate what they tried to do, but they are just so sloppily handeled. They are too long, have little relevancy, and begin without warning. Sure the game says "Get Ready", but then it immediately starts, causing me to not even see whatever the first input was supposed to be. Instead of being a way for you to "play the cutscenes", it comes off feeling like tacked on gameplay.
Did I mention they are too long? Some of the inputs try to pretend they have relevancy to the scene, hit the top buttons and the guy jumps in the cutscene, yay, fine. But that is in between about a dozen random presses that have no meaning in anything. It's incredibly obnoxious. And the scenes drag on forever, I nearly lost my mind during that stupid
Some of the other irregular scenes are pretty amusing though. Like playing as someone with a phobia of tight spaces, regulating your breathing as you try and find your way through the dark.
Makes me wonder about Heavy Rain. Will it follow the same formula of having awesome atmosphere but unbearable action sequences?

Re: The "What Are You Playing Now?" Thread
I started Dead Space (PC) the other day since I got it cheaply during the Steam sale. I like it so far, though I'm slightly baffled how this game made it past the German ratings system uncensored.
On a technical note, controls are horribly sluggish unless you force VSync on through the driver options. The game has an ingame option for VSync, but only the driver option will fix the awful input lag.
This might actually be the only shooter in existance that plays better with an Xbox 360 controller than a mouse and keyboard.

Re: The "What Are You Playing Now?" Thread
Finished Dead Space. I can't remember another game in recent history that pissed me off so much. They weren't even trying to hide the fact that you just kept doing the same thing over and over. And the number of times it should have been over but wasn't must be some sort of record.
Glad it only cost €10.

I liked it, but my brother played missions 6-9 or something, so I didn't have that annoying repetition. I think it was a shining example of how fucked up it is that consumers try to "force" a game to have a certain length. FPS games don't need to be 10 hours! 6 Hours is fine! Thats why I fucking love the HL2 Episodes, but wasn't in love with HL2.

That's tricky. Most of the short shooters have a multiplayer mode to make up for it. IMO, a short game with no multiplayer had better be a budget title (like the HL2 Episodes). With a limited replay value due to their linearity, I'd be hard pressed to pick up a 6-hour shooter with no multiplayer mode at full price.
Anyway, I would have been pissed if I had paid the full €60 for Dead Space a year ago. In my opinion that one is actually a game that would have benefitted from being half as long as it actually was.

Dead Space was amazing. The flamethrower sucked and there were too many contamination type rooms in the last 2 chapters, but those were my only problems.

I'm curious what you enjoyed about it in particular. For me, the game lost its atmosphere after the first chapter. It was supposed to be scary, but since it keeps happening the same way, you simply expect things to jump at you whenever you open a door or round a corner. No amount of sound design can change that, nor can giving the necromorphs a darker color scheme in the second half of the game.
I became seriously annoyed with the missions. Get from A to B to fix/break/turn on/turn off something. But oh, wouldn't you know it, you can't take the direct route, so you have to go through C, D, E and F and pick up/turn on/turn off X, Y and Z along the way! Once you've done that, queue up the inevitable news from your "partners" that what you just did didn't work, so you'll have to try something else. Rinse, repeat. Add in the three or four times when the game was building up to a conclusion only to pull the rug out from under your feet and throw you into yet more missions of exactly the same type.
Since I played the game on the PC I didn't have the "benefit" of DLC. From reading the descriptions of the packages it seems that most of them were specifically designed as a paid removal of tedium.
For me, Dead Space was a massive disappointment after all the type that surrounded the game a year ago.
-
Re: The "What Are You Playing Now?" Thread
I was going to add more in that first post, but I couldn't really think of what to say when you hated it that much.
It does get a bit repetitive with Isaac go do this! Now go to this! OH NO, back to this! But not to an unbearable degree and many horror games involve backtracking. The objective line he shoots from his palm also made this much less tedious than it would be in other games.
The sound and atmosphere make the game scary, not really the monsters themselves. I dunno, I played it on hard and was always nearly out of ammo/health which would have added to it but I found it fairly scary. Apparently a whole lot of easily-scared people simply couldn't even play the game for long periods of time and the devs said that the sequel will be paced so as to give you periods of feeling like a badass as a break in between highly tense, dangerous situations.
As for things I liked about it, it has a better atmosphere than 95% of the games I've played, the sound design is incredible, the guns (flamethrower aside) are all fun to use, and the enemies are fun to fight. The trend of HUD-less gameplay has annoyed me more often than not, but Dead Space does it perfectly and believably. I was looking at Mass Effect 2 and instead of a health bar, you now have these stupid veins encroaching on the edges of the screen when your HP starts to drop and found myself wishing they had just copied Dead Space.
I never bought any DLC, all they do is give you better armor.

I guess I watch too many horror movies. I don't scare easily anymore :p
I did keep running out of ammo on normal difficulty as well, but for me most of the tenser moments were self-imposed (trying to backtrack and getting stuck with an autosave in a monster-filled room and no ammo, no health).

OMG I have to many games to play!!!!!!! I have been trying to finish up Tales of Vesperia (rented from gamefly) I have infamous half finished, Dragon's Age sitting upstairs waiting for me to finish ToV, just spent my gamestop gift cards and picked up GTA 4 episodes from Liberty city, demon's soul, and CoD:MW2. I need to finish most of that so I can play Mass Effect 2 when it comes out OMG overload!!!!!!!!!!

Re: The "What Are You Playing Now?" Thread
I just started Batman: Arkham Asylum. I tend to be skeptical whenever the community at large raves about a game. I figured this would be good, but that I would quickly forget about it.
I was wrong. I'm still only at the beginning learning how to play and it is already amazing. The detective mode in particular impresses me. So many games try something like this and fail (ghostbusters), then you add in the stealth that doesn't suck and fun thug stomping action, good stuff.
I also just finished God of War: Chains of Olympus. One of the very many games I bought on sale over the past two years and never found time to play. It also was amazing. It was freaking amazing when you consider it was a PSP game, I could hardly believe it. Extremely impressive work they did, would still be a good game even on a console.

The downside is that detective mode is so useful that it's tempting to keep it on all the time, which causes you to miss out on most of the game's visuals.
I'm currently playing Assassin's Creed II, which so far has been much more fun than the first one. While the basic concept (freerunning and killing) hasn't changed, there's a lot more to do. Upgradable armor and weapons are a welcome addition, as is the ability to renovate your hometown for store discounts and extra income.

Re: The "What Are You Playing Now?" Thread
Playing Valkyria Chronicles. I knew I was going to like it, but I'm surprised at just how well made and polished it is. They couldn't have had that huge of a budget, it was a new IP.
I was worried it was going to be excessively cheesey in the way jrpgs and anime sometimes are, but I'm really getting into it so far. The characters are fun, and there is a perfect balance between plot and gameplay.

Aaaand back to Fallout 3 I go (PS3). I am nearing lvl 13 (or 14, I forget). Game grows on you once you figure out how to do stuff, which skills are important, how repair works, etc.
I shall soon buy DLC. Should have gone for GOTY edition but ... whatever.
On a sidenote I almost fried my PS3 yesterday when I walked up to it to swap the NFS:S disk out and the Fallout3 disk in... electronic discharge from finger to eject button scared the shit out of me ... and messed up the picture, had to restart it.

That happened to me several times (no freezes or screen corruption, though). I've since taken to using the controller or Blu-ray remote for ejecting discs.
Probably one of the reasons (along with cost) why they went with physical buttons on the Slim.

Re: The "What Are You Playing Now?" Thread
Related: Buying from the UK (I'm in Germany) backfired for Fallout 3 somewhat.
Can't buy the DLC for the UK version from Germany, have to setup a new PSN account (not a big problem), and enter billing details (big problem, country in account is checked vs the one on your CC).
Ended up buying a 20 quid PSN card over ebay from some goldseller service. The good: I had the code in 5 minutes via email.
The bad: It could have gone wrong too...
The ugly: I'll end up paying € 20 more than if I had gotten the GOTY edition in the first place.
Fallout 3 has really grown on me though, I guess I'm over halfway through the storyline mission (entering Vault 112 soon), but have yet to explore 70% of the map (wild guess). Bought the addon that raises the lvl limit to 30. Hope mobs don't scale.
-
Re: The "What Are You Playing Now?" Thread
Mobs don't scale, in fact, you may find yourself intentionally using crap weapons b/c FO3 can get awfully trivial at high levels and with good weapons, despite its awesomeness.
-
Re: The "What Are You Playing Now?" Thread
They do scale, sort of. The DLC that adds the extra levels also adds things like ghoul reavers and the higher tier of supermutants I forget the name of. They show up in areas where you wouldn't have otherwise seen them had you been lower level. I'm pretty sure the whole game works like that -- as you level, tougher enemies are added in.
-
Re: The "What Are You Playing Now?" Thread
Still playing MW2 on xbox live, nearly back to 70 after prestiging for the first time.
However, I got Assassin's Creed 2 and Fallout3 GOTY edition for Christmas and just popped in AC2 yesterday. I'm hooked! I enjoyed the first one, but this one has a better story, controls, has not been repetitive in the least so far. Loving the extra history and background on the characters and buildings. Also, i've traveled throughout Italy so it's neat to play through all those areas.

Re: The "What Are You Playing Now?" Thread
I bought Max Payne 1 and 2 a couple months ago for cheap, and started playing it on a whim the other day. It's kind of cool for an old game, and also incredibly, mind-numbingly cheesey. You can't help but laugh at some of the stupid monologues he comes up with. I also feel obligated to give Max Payne the award for the "stupidest looking face in all of videogaming". He's got the douchiest expression on his face I think I have ever seen. And that's ignoring the cheeseball they use to portray Max in the comic panel cutscenes, haha oh man.
I've also been trying to finish Sands of Destruction, which for every great thing it does, it horribly breaks something else. Very frustrating. I've been thinking of writing a review for it, but never seem to measure out the patience to actually spend the time to write it.

Re: The "What Are You Playing Now?" Thread
In between bouts of Bioshock 2 multiplayer, I beat Uncharted 2. I liked it, but not as much as many people do. The combat is often irritating with bullet sponge enemies/wonky cover and the gameplay doesn't mesh with the story/world on several occasions.
I figured I'd go look into one of the games I've picked up cheap over the past few months (simpsons game, pure, wet, etc) while deciding whether or not to buy Heavy Rain next week... but then I started keeping up with Civ5 news... and Civ4+expansions were inevitably reinstalled.

Re: The "What Are You Playing Now?" Thread
I played through Shadow of the Colossus. It wasn't really quite what I was expecting, and honestly, a little overyhyped. I remember it getting billed as a game with "bosses that are so big they are the levels". This is very deceptive, it is more accurate to say that the bosses are big, and there are no levels.
Most of the bosses were pretty dang cool though, and it was worth suffering through the god awful controls and migraine-inducing excuse for a camera just to play it.
It's kind of funny, I made a point to play this now so that God of War doing the same thing wouldn't ruin the original experience for me, but I don't think it's going to matter. I don't think they are going to be as similar as I once believed.

Re: The "What Are You Playing Now?" Thread
Never did get Mr. Perfect 9, but I am pretty awesome at 2D platformers. I absolutely recommend picking up 9 and 10 though if you like Mega Man games. I haven't gotten around to finishing 10 just yet, but I probably will either today or tomorrow. There is apparently a Hard mode that is unlocked when you beat the game which excites me.

Now playing: MLB 10 The Show and Battlefield: Bad Company 2. No other games need exist for awhile, except for LOTRO when the wife wants to duo.

Heavy Rain turned out to be disappointingly short. Still another week to cover until FF13 comes out. Bleargh!

Re: The "What Are You Playing Now?" Thread
just beat inferno. i dont see why that game got such bad reviews. only thing i can think of are religious people thinking its a sin to play taht game but really i think that game is a sunday school lesson dressed in disguise hehe
but anyways its a great game. what i think separates this from other hell games is it's actual 7 layers of hell and not some fiend comic book type of stuff. also i see this gaming having high replay value with the new dlc coming up. co op and a level maker.
anyways im almost caught up with my backlog. just have some steam games i'll probably never get to(bio shock, gta 4, half life 2 expansions) and demon souls/prototype for the ps3. i'll probably put all that on hold tho for ff13. :)

Re: The "What Are You Playing Now?" Thread
Damn it! My copy of Final Fantasy XIII just came in and I'm in the middle of Bioshock 2. Dilemma!
-
Re: The "What Are You Playing Now?" Thread
That doesn't sound like a dilemma at all. But I was never a big fan of FF-series.
-
Re: The "What Are You Playing Now?" Thread
i always make a rule only 1 story game at a time. mean dont play like mgs4, halo campaign, and bayonetta all at the same time!
stuff with high replay value like wow, mw2, tekken, even maybe dragon age/demon souls would be okay imo tho because do get worn out on those story games too hehe
-
Re: The "What Are You Playing Now?" Thread
It's similar for me, so I decided to finish Bioshock 2 first, which I did last night (bit bloated in the middle, imo). So after two days' delay I can finally jump headfirst into FF13 tonight.

House of the Dead: Overkill
<$20. Much more fun than House of the Dead 1 and 2 (single disc game with both), which was very poorly executed.

Batman Arkhan Asylum. Freaking loving it so far :D

Re: The "What Are You Playing Now?" Thread
I'm playing Infinite Space, which I bought last month but am only just now finding time to play. It's pretty nifty, but not very polished. It's basically Eve Offline, the strategy jrpg. You build ships, each class of which has it's own strengths and weaknesses, and assign party members to various positions on the ship, improving its performance in some way based on the character's stats.
Meanwhile you can customize the ship by installing modules in a set space. You have a limited space, and the modules are represented by tetris pieces. You have to make the most of the room you have, and choose which you would rather have. You could have a basic radar piece and a shield unit, or you can have a better radar piece and leave no room for the shields. The shields help versus laser weaponry, but not versus missiles, so the loadout will depend on the situation.
While traveling you choose a destination and travel automatically, during which time you may run into random encounters with pirates. Combat is sort of rock/paper/scissors, you have normal, barrage, and dodge. Dodge evades a barrage but is weak to a normal attack. Barrage attacks do a ton of damage if not dodged. All this time a gauge is filling up which determines what kind of command you are able to give (think ATB in Final Fantasy, but with tiers). While waiting for it to fill, you will tell the ship to leave weapon range to reduce the fire you take. Throw in different weapon types, fleet formations, and fighters, etc.
The graphics aren't very good, and the sound is muted. I have to wonder how awesome it would look if it was a simple PC game. Some of the strategy is also muted. You can have up to 5 ships, but they all seem to attack the same target. Even with just two ships at the point in the game I'm at now, sometimes a barrage is massive overkill. I wish they would plaster more than one target in a situation like that.
Also been thinking of starting No More Heroes, which I've had forever, but I don't usually have time for the Wii. The graphics give me a headache so far, and I don't really find the main character particularly likeable. :p

Brutal Legend, picked up for $10 used frm Gamefly. Basically a 7 game that's a 9 if you loved Metal during the 80s.

Re: The "What Are You Playing Now?" Thread
FF13 - I'm slowly working through it to entertain the missus. I like the combat, I think the voice acting is horrendous, and I enjoy the graphics. The camera gives me a headache.
I succumbed to COD4: MW2, so I'm spending some time playing that. I loathe FPS on a console, but this game works well. I enjoy getting on the phone and chatting with a friend (and using 3rd person view to help him out when I'm dead!).
WoW.
Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box - great game, small snippets of time.
I'm also playing Peggle on every environment it's shown up on.

i gave boarderlands on xbox a chance and glad i did because it's one of the best MP games i've played in a while(well besides tekken, wow or ST4 hehe).
it's sort of like wow meets fps. always exploring around and doing quests for exping. also the npcs get really insane as more people join in.

I'm waiting for that to drop to a lower price point but it looks fun. I just picked up Mass Effect 2 from Amazon and they had a deal where Mass Effect was free. So i just started ME1 and will do ME2, hopefully be done in time for Red Dead Redemption. Oh, I just beat Braid as well, short but lots of fun and tricky.

Re: The "What Are You Playing Now?" Thread
Finally beat Infinite Space. Crazy crazy long game, especially for a handheld. Will finally find time to play God of War 3, a week before Red Dead Redemption comes out. :o

Re: The "What Are You Playing Now?" Thread
besides wow..
I just got some old school WWII games and am going through them, the best one so far is Theatre of War, it is kind of RPG ish in that your troops get EXP, and can pickup items. Odd but interesting.
The battles are perfect.. no BS RTS building resources and zerg rushing crapola like all of Starcraft/Warcraft(sorry, I hate them both, although Warcraft was more entertaining. ... but I digress..)
Theatre of War has much to like, some oddness, but it is the closest to a 3d table top game of the old school Panzer Blitz (Avalon Hill?) or Steel Tigers or the share ware WinSPWW2.
Although it is not turn based, it does have pause to give out your orders,.
has great graphics, command control, line-of-sight, high level of details down to individual squad member names, even when you have like 50 or more! Each tank has a crew, and off screen bombardments, and air support.. the scale of the battles are between 100-150 units and fixed map borders.. the game is HARD, not your novice game that assumes you know your hardware and how to use it, expect to lose.. a lot and experiment on tactics... great game if you like tactical combat that comes down to having just one tank operational vs one AT gun showdowns... anyway, if you like WWII games, you may want to give it a shot.

I agree, I was very skeptical about this game, and it is rather fun, more than I thought. Doing it solo, not sure about multi player thing.. currently lvl 14

Re: The "What Are You Playing Now?" Thread
God of War 3 was amazingly epic. Also the most disturbingly violent game I have ever played.
My only complaint
Also a few fights near the end were ridiculously hard. I didn't die that many times in the previous games combined. The exploding dogs and spike trap fight were infuriating! :p

Re: The "What Are You Playing Now?" Thread
Finished Alan Wake. Short game, recommend renting it if you can.
Fun game, decent story. 7/10

Re: The "What Are You Playing Now?" Thread
I was worried that Alan Wake might be too much like Alone in the Dark (the 2008 iteration), but so far it's actually very good, though I admit I like the story far more than the very simplistic gameplay.
