DKP stands for dragon kill points, back when pretty all the highest level raid mobs were dragons
its based on a system that depending on how many dragons one killed/helped kill, one recieved an X number of points... these points were then used in a system to give the person with the most points precedence in recieving loot (lets say i helped out in 20 dragon kills and bob helped out in 15, if the "supercloak of uberness" dropped, i would either get it automatically or gain precedence in the random roll to shave my odds down... i think that you lose points if you use them too...)
Hi,
Just registered to thank everyone of you guys who has been posting. Took me a couple of days to go through the whole thread, 37 pages is a LOT :)
I've had minimal experience with MMOs, mostly because I didn't feel like paying a recurring fees. However, I got interested in WoW way back in 2002 I think, when I saw that trailer. I started playing EQ for the sole reason to familiarize myself with the MMO genre. The thing that really put me off it was the boring and repititive "rat-killing" that one had to go through at the initial levels. I have been a hardcore RPG fanatic for quite a few years, and IMO, the questing system that WoW has put in place will make the game infinately more enjoyable to people like me. I know atleast 5-6 of my friends (other than those who play EQ) would be playing WoW because it has more of a storyline and follows the quest system of the normal D&D RPGs.
I intend playing a Night Elf Rogue as my first character. Since I'm not that imaginative or creative, I'm pretty sure I'm going to name my character from some Tolkien book or something
For people like Mountain Man, I have the following link:
www.warbucket.com/wowtv
They have four beta screen-shot feeds running. Check it out.
Also, for WoW related stuff, check their main site www.warbucket.com, some really cool stuff there.
I've already seen that site Leprechaun, but thanks anyway.
And I hope that when you said people like me, you meant entirely sane people with full lives, who just happen to have an unhealthy obsession with WoW. :)
By the way, nice choice on the NE Rogue, if I may say so myself :D

well i love long posts ahahaha
I am trying to figure out how large the world in the game is now, because it sounds pretty damn huge according to Blizzard and to this forum and a bunch of other places.
So I have two questions:
1) If you can cross the sea between Azeroth and Kalimdor (or Lordaeron & Kalimdor, or Khaz Modan and Kalimdor), about how long does it take?
2) How long would it take to go on foot from the far Northern part of Kalimdor to the far south of Kalimdor?
If none of you haven't actually tried to run on foot before your best guess will suffice.
I'm serious too, so please, no sarcasm, just an estimate from anyone who has played so far.
At least several hours. It took me an hour to swim from Booty Bay to Thadol Span (bridge between Wetlands and Arathi Highlands, south of Undead lands). While I've never actually run from north all the way south, it's a serious journey and can take at least two hours, if not more, to accomplish. A daunting task if you hope to live through it without going through dangerous areas.
I can't really give an estimate on the two continents because the boats aren't working (they insta-port us to the other side of the world) yet.
There's too much open sea in between the continents for it to just be empty, I think that Blizzard needs to do something with the open sea.
I know they have underwater quests offshore, but I'm talking about something having to do with the deep deep sea, just seems like a waste of space to have all that ocean but to just be able to instantly sail to the other side.
But that's just me thinking out loud (or in writing I should say). :)
I've been wondering something for awhile, are there any cinematics in the game so far, or does anybody know if Blizzard plans to put cinematics into the game?
I just ask because anybody who I know has played D2 or wc3 thought the cinematics were one of the coolest things about the games.
About open sea - they don't necassarily need to actually make that large body of water - it depends on how the boats will work. It's not particularly fun to sit on a boat and do nothing, spending an hour of your playtime sailing - at least not when you're doing it for the seventh time. This said I think boat trips in EQ had its own charm, and you got to meet lots of people you'd otherwise never have time to chat with.
If the boats offer some sort of unique activity, a game in the game (like gambling or sea battles), then long boat trips might work, but if not I believe at least parts of the trip will be done as instant teleport, "time looping" or cutscenes. Or boats will go insanely fast.
But I don't know - what does the beta people say?
The beta people say ships aren't enabled yet, and just work as teleporters right now. But I'm expecting them to make the ships worthwhile. There's certainly enough space on ships, and enough nooks and crannies, for them to have stuff going on aboard, and transoceanic travel in Warcraft has always been very difficult (in War3, most of the ships that sailed to Kalimdor didn't make it), so hopefully the Maelstrom and other elements will factor into sailing voyages.
Agreed... this is a lesson EQ1 teaches very sternly. If you're going to have vehicles be the exclusive method of transport between two zones, the ride had better not be long and boring.Quote:

only problem I had with boats is when I would zone slower then the boat and when I came in zone the boat was not there and I was dumped into the water and had to gate and start all over. =/ also if you were travaling by yourself it was very boring, nothing to do on the boat.
EQ1 boat travel was long and boring, but I think the bugginess was the worst part. My worst memories of boat travel involve the two following "features":
Crashing while zoning and logging back in to no boat -- particularly bad as a melee class, since you then have to swim to somewhere where you can get back on a boat. The worst variation is when you crash on the zone to your destination ... and come back on the wrong side of the god damn zone line.
Shuttles (e.g. BB and Erudin) being out of sync with the main boat, so that you would wait for the boat, ride out to it, not be able to get on, and end up waiting another cycle after that.
The only boat that ever worked even vaguely reliably for me was the raft to Tim Deep.
I would have happily endured endless long rides for immersion purposes if the boats had worked reliably.
I hope that before Blizzard get too swept up in making cool things to do on the boat, they make sure the boat code works. Please. I beg you.
I would not. I didn't mind the boats much at first, when all I did was ride between Qeynos and Erudin with occaisional stops on Wisp island. Nor did I particularly mind the first few trips across OOT or from BB to Firiona Vie. I agree that it helped with the immensity feeling of the world.Quote:

I think the real turning point for me was when I got levitate(for mages, that happens around level 39 or so) and I decided to try to run across Ocean of Tears. When I hit the wall, I realized how stupid it was that I could outrun a fricking boat across the ocean but wasn't allowed to actually do it. That was also around the same time I was frequenting Overthere and riding the Bloated Belly. Waiting up to 15 minutes for that blasted hunk of boards to show up got really frustrating, and then it was another 7 minutes ride through empty ocean to get to overthere.
The other annoying thing about boats was waiting for them. If you didn't have the 2 stages:
1. Sit at PC, on the dock, waiting for boat. (Maybe go swimming or fishing)
2. Ride boat, if you afk make sure you're back in time to disembark.
If you could always depend on a boat being there, it wouldn't be so bad. Or if boat trips weren't so excruciatingly long. Waiting for the Qeynos/Erudin boat is tolerable, since the ride is relatively painless. Same with the Oasis raft to TD. But you should not have to wait so long in Freeport. It actually would have been really cool for the character of the city to actually have, you know, a lively port on the waterfront with a lot of boats and stuff, instead of the lonely abandoned wharf with a token dive and general goods shop.
But again, in the long run there really needs to be something to do on a boat, otherwise it will be a drag on the game.
Well we know that they id one as an intro , altely they released making of video of cinematics , so its very likely that there will be someQuote:

well with the current quick air travel system , only people enjoying boats would prolly get on them , except for a few quest maybe..Quote:
