Impressions from a more open minded (God I hope I'm not like Xxashxx) DAoC player
Greetings,
I will admit right from the start that I'm biased towards DAoC - I tried EQ, and found the community exceedingly boorish and unhelpful (this was a few years ago.) The DAoC community is the same - the only advantage the game had over EQ for me was I had 6 other friends playing it.
Ok, so now you know where I'm coming from - and after reading this thread - I'm pretty sure where the majority of you all are coming from.
Even being a vet of RvR (Realm v. Realm), I hate the implementation, and barely tolerate the concept. PvP (Player v. Player) tends to come down to quicker reflexes, better gear or simple tactical luck (unobstructed view, better scouting, etc.) I have crappy reflexes, and stay away from the FPS arena. I don't play 18+ hours a day, so don't have the a) money to buy good gear, b) time to make good gear, or c) community status to run a raid to obtain good gear. And while I have on occasion been the recipient of good scouting reports - I more often end up dead under a Norseman's boar spear - so to speak.
A bit more WoW related background - I just finished replaying the W3 original missions (plan on getting TFT sometime this week.) Two observations can be made from the end of the original campaign - 1) The Horde and the Alliance are on shaky ground - but they are talking to each other (I assume something really bad happens with the Lich King in TFT to cause that to crumble.) and 2) Prior to their diplomatic overtures, all four sides were KOS (kill on sight). I can appreciate a merging of allies into two camps (making a four pronged 'realm' war (for lack of a better term) would be daunting.) But I find a complete lack of conflict odd. I can't fathom a complete scism of the paradigm of the World of Warcraft, as espoused in the WC games where a human and an orc, unable to speak to each other, would just completely ignore each other and live their lives apart from conflict.
I can see maybe passifistic individuals not battling, but in general - the conflict is too intense not to allow fighting. You might as well make each server allied centric if there is no interaction (Alliance Servers and Horde Servers)
I do understand that the interaction is not in game yet (can't wait for reports from the next push!). I'm simply responding to those who don't want any PvP at all - or only want it concentual. Thats like going to Bagdad and yelling out in english that you're an American, and are there to see the sights. Pretty sure you'll be dead fairly quickly. As an orc or undead, I'd be rather offended that I couldn't prove my battle prowess by killing your scrawny human or elf butt, just because some 'god' of the ether decided to take the game away from its roots. I forget who said it - but I agree - this isn't the World of Peacecraft.
I do think that there should be plenty of places that are safe - where one can PvE (player v. environment) to their hearts content, get (or make) uber loot by killing uber mobs etc, and never see a hostile (other than mob) face.
But, if I, as an orc, troll etc. wander into Alliance held territory - to 'see the sights', so to speak, I should be KOS. I could see maybe Tauren being able to earn enough faction to not be KOS to Alliance guards and Gnomes for the Horde, but at no time should the flag be removed from players. Ambassadors always run the risk of not being revered in their host country - would make for a fun battle.
Even DAoC and it's vaunted 'RvR' as endgame doesn't require it. The non-RvR server is doing quite well. And with the latest expansion, its like level 50+ In fact, its for that reason I quit the game - I don't want to simply level myself to 50, then deal with getting master abilities, then deal with leveling artifacts, all to be viable in RvR, which is where I was pre-expansion. Someone at Mythic looked at EQ and thought the eternal questing model was more enjoyable. Meh- to each their own - there will always be people who find their nitch in each type of MMO that comes out. When I first saw WoW I thought it was too cartoony (I hate the DAoC realm of Hibernia for that exact reason). But content, game play, the GUI and community can all override the graphics. So far, Master Dustyboots expose has really peeked my interest. I love reading all the questions and answers from this board.
Thanks for letting me ramble. While there are a number of phrases and concepts that are beyond me (due to their being pure EQish), I've enjoyed reading the posts, and trying to figure out whats being said.
Keep up the great work - and know this is one of my 'Official' WoW sites :)
